Short History of Greece
The roots of this country can be traced all the way back to ancient Greece. Also referred to as the western civilization cradle, the nation is considered to be the place where democracy was born. It is where Western literature, political science, Olympic Games, Historiography and major mathematical as well as scientific principles were born. More importantly, Greece hosts 17 World Heritage UNESCO Sites. It was not until 1830, after the War of Independence, that the modern time Greek State was born.
The Geography and Climate of Greece
Greece is mainly comprised of mountainous land. Its coastline is indented and it also houses numerous islands. Depending on individual perceptions about islands, Greece has twelve hundred to six thousand islands. Out of these islands, 227 are inhabited. The largest of these islands is Crete while Euboea is the most populous one.
The 2nd largest island is Euripus Strait, which is 60 meters wide followed closely by Rhodes then Lesbos. These islands are grouped together forming clusters. About 8% of the average land is made up of hills or mountains, making the country one of the most mountainous countries in Europe.
Primarily, the climate is Mediterranean featuring mild yet wet winters and hot but dry summers. This climate is experienced throughout most of the islands including Cyclades, Crete, Dodecanese, Athens and Peloponnese. Certain parts of Sterea Ellada also experience this type of climate. The climate is mostly affected by the mountain range Pindus, which makes areas on the western range wetter.
