Many travelers called Bern a “city of flowers” – almost in every window you can see the elegant pot of violets and geraniums. Bern is located in the heart of Switzerland, almost on the border of French- German parts of the country – the capital of the canton of the same name and the whole Confederacy. The population of the suburbs is 300 000. The city was founded in 1191. Originally the city was built of oak wood, but in 1405 it was destroyed by fire.
Most of the historical buildings that have survived to this day are built of local stone and date from the XVI – XVII centuries. The symbol of the city is a bear. Nowhere in the world there are so many bears as in Bern. Flag, badges, cards, shop windows, Clock Tower chimes, fountains are decorated with the image of this beast.
In Berne there are a large number of theaters, museums, cafes, restaurants and parks. Old town of Bern, recognized by UNESCO as World Cultural Monument is small and allows you to see all the sights on foot. You cannot remain indifferent to the unique monuments of history – the clock tower, the Bear Moat, Parliament, the city’s cathedral. The central location of the city makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the rest of the country, by any means of transport. To fall in love with Switzerland, it is enough to meet Bern.
