Reminders of the literary heritage of the city are everywhere, but unobtrusive. James Joyce looks at visitors from the walls of pubs, from under his glasses, protruding from a copper plate – such reliefs in Dublin are marked the best pubs. Design of hotel “Bloom” contains little reference to the “Ulysses“, such as that cannot be noticed: excerpts and quotations from the novel covered walls of toilets. Memorial to the writer is right on the sidewalk of important pedestrian Earl Street, but it is so small that easily mixes with the crowd. Here and there in the sidewalk soldered in the plates engraved like “At Westland Row he stopped in front of a showcase of Belfast Tea Company, read the labels on packages in lead foil – an elite mix, best quality, family tea.” James Joyce. “
Looking up, you find out the full line quotation, Westland Row, tea shop. Face of one of the heroes of Joyce “reminded his brown color Dublin streets,” but here the singer of Irish capital was still a little away from his accuracy. In a restrained color palette of the city also included multiple shades of bummed brick and rich gray – the stone color, of which are composed the Gothic churches.
Obligatory tourist program in Dublin is elementary and if you want is done in one day: Trinity College, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Castle, Phoenix Park, the pedestrian Grafton Street with street musicians and sword-swallowers, elegant Georgian surroundings of Stephens Green and Marion Square, a couple of touching local museums. The main gastronomic attraction guides proclaim Irish stew or ragout – something like soup or the second course of all that the mistress had that time. But it takes not so much time to taste this great brew: one portion is enough for three days. The usual guide in this case is not the most inspiring advisor. In Dublin it is absolutely necessary to know that the hand-made ditch of the Royal Canal – is Joyce Styx, that awkward stone tower – Martello, and in this smoked building gathered Irish heroes of resistance. Otherwise it will be just ditch, clumsy tower and smoked building. There few places where the impressions of the city are so much dependent on your original favor to it – from that whether you are passionate at least a little about Irish literature, history, mythology. – If not, what you have seen, though it may seem nice, but not particularly entertaining. And there will be no choice but once again to allow the funnel of pub fun to entrap you.
