The History of the Chena Hot Springs Resort

Chena Hot Springs Resort actually celebrated its 100 year anniversary on August 5, 2005. The hot springs were first discovered on August 5, 1905 by two gold miners Robert and Thomas Swan. They were brothers who recalled that a U.S. Geological Survey team, in 1904, had reportedly seen steam rising from a valley.

This valley that was home to the hot springs was located somewhere on the upper Chena River. The survey team at the time concluded that it had to be from natural hot springs. However they did not investigate any further. However the Swan brothers did explore and they duly discovered the hot springs at Chena. However the brothers did not claim legal title to the hot springs at Chena. Today the area belongs to the Wilson family and is one of Alaska’s premier getaway resorts.
