Well, the festive season is upon us at last and as you’d expect, there are merry happenings aplenty in the capital this month. However, it’s not just Christmas that’s taking centre stage at this time of year in London – here arefive of the best events happening during December as recommended by the guys over at St. Ermin’s Hotel in Westminster.
1. Statoil Masters Tennis
At the beginning of the month, the Statoil Master Tennis tournament rolls into the stunning venue of Kensington’s Royal Albert Hall – easily the most beautiful place in which you’ll ever see a sports event. Wrapping up the ATP Champions Tour, this event will see British great Tim Henman returning to defend his title against an all-star line-up including John McEnroe, Mark Philippoussis, Pat Cash, and Peter McNamara.
2. See a classic at the Palladium
The London Palladium is one of the city’s most magnificent theatres with a long history which has played host to the annual Royal Variety Performance and stars including Harry Houdini, Ivor Novello, Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra. Score top tickets for their production of Scrooge this Christmas and you’ll be popular with all the family. Tommy Steele plays Ebenezer and the performance includes magical illusions created by top magician Paul Kieve. Secure one of the golden boxes for the best seats in the house.
3. Messiah by candlelight
As part of the Winter Festival 2012, Handel’s most touching composition will be played in full on Sunday 9th December in the Royal Festival Hall. Held in candlelight, four acclaimed soloists will join the London Chorus and the Mozart Festival Orchestra and all will be dressed in full 18th century costume. Get seats in the front stalls for the best view of the choir and orchestra.
4. Bring in the New Year in style
As December draws to a close, everyone will be looking for a memorable place to see in the New Year. If you’ve never done it before, a luxury Thames boat cruise is a fantastic experience and a way of celebrating in real style. River cruise companies such as Thames Private Charters create bespoke and standard party packages for the event. How about a champagne dinner cruise aboard replica paddle steamer the P.S. Elizabethan? Book up early to avoid disappointment.
5. British Military Tournament
On December 8th and 9th, this annual event will return in what is Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Year. Held at Olympic venue Earls Court in West London, this is a great event for all the family to enjoy and appreciate the showmanship and skill of the Armed Forces as over 600 men and women, and 150 horses, display their many talents. For an extra special evening, sign up for the VIP reception, at which you’ll enjoy top seats in front of the Royal Box, drinks reception, special access and a host of other benefits. Funds raised from ticket sales will be donated to TheRoyal Navy & Royal Marines Charity, ABF The Soldiers’ Charityand TheRoyal Air Force Benevolent Fund.
